Fresh Market Exhibit
Language Extension: MORE
Welcome to the Fresh Market! You’ve seen how the word MORE can make grocery play fun and language-rich. Here are additional ways to encourage your child to use MORE while exploring, sorting, and shopping.
Shopping for Favorites: Ask your child, “Do we need more apples or more bananas?” Encourage them to respond and hand items to the cart.
Sorting by Category: Use the color and category strips to sort fruits, vegetables, and other items. Model phrases like, “Let’s get more red items!” or “Do we need more veggies?”
Checkout Play: Role-play paying for items or bagging groceries. “Do we need more bags?” or “More coins, please!” This encourages turn-taking and use of MORE in social routines.
Mix & Match Fun: Encourage your child to pick “more of one type” or “more of this color” e.g., “More green veggies!”
At the Museum: More Ways to Use MORE
Real Grocery Store: Ask your child to help load the cart — “Do we need more milk?” or “Let’s get more apples!”
Snack & Meal Time: Offer choices: “Do you want more grapes or more crackers?” Pause and wait for a response.
Toy & Art Play: Sort blocks, crayons, or toys using MORE: “Can we put more red blocks here?”
At Home: Take MORE Beyond the Museum
When your child reaches for something, model the word MORE and pause. Wait expectantly for a response, it could be a word, sign, or gesture. Expand on what they say:
Child points → “Yes! More apples!”
Child says “more” → “That’s right! More bananas in the cart!”
Extra Tip: Turn MORE into a game! Offer small sets of objects and ask, “Do we need more?” Celebrate every attempt to encourage language growth, comparison skills, and participation.
