Fresh Market: Talk & Play at Home
Welcome! Your child can keep practicing language skills beyond the museum—while shopping, cooking, and eating at home. Here are some simple ideas to make everyday experiences playful and language-rich.
Language Strategy: Choices
Let your child make choices whenever possible.
Grocery Store: “Do you want apples or bananas?”
Snack Time: “Do you want water or milk?”
Cooking: “Do you want to stir or pour"?”
Choices build confidence, independence, and vocabulary
Add Describing Words
Talk about colors: “Red apple, yellow banana”
Talk about shapes: "Round orange, long carrot”
Talk about size/quantity: “Big watermelon, tiny grape, a lot of peas”
Talk about textures & tastes: “Squishy tomato, crunchy carrot, sweet apple”
Use Everyday Actions
Label what you’re doing as you cook: “Stir the soup. Pour the milk. Chop the carrot.”
Ask your child to help: “Can you peel the banana? Put the apples in the basket.”
Make it a Game
Sort and Count: Have your child group items by color, shape, or type
Name That Item: Ask, “Which fruit is round and red?”
Choice Challenge: Give 2-3 options and let your child pick what goes in a bowl or a plate
